Title: The Rebound
Director: Bart Freundlich
Starring: Catherine Zeta-Jones, Justin Bartha
Story:
Catherine Zeta-Jones played a 40something single mother yang diselingkuhi suaminya, bercerai, dan membawa dua anaknya pindah ke kota. She quickly got a new job, and had to find a nanny to take care of the kids. Justin Bartha, the devilishly cute 25-year-old guy was her nanny. It developed into something else, and yea, the rest is a common rom-com scenario.
-SPOILER ALERT-
They broke up because she thought there was no future in it, it was an awful breakup for both of them, he traveled the world, and five years after that they accidentaly met and shared meaningful short talks and laughters.
*sigh*
I say:
Formulanya sama, the older woman and the younger guy. Hollywood never got bored with it. To be honest, halfway through the movie I was thinking about ejecting the cd and watch Modern Family instead. Especially because of The Rebound's cliche scenes and tacky dialogues. BUT I managed to continue - maybe the cute Justin Bartha had something to do with it.
Anyway, I finished it. Yay.
Plotnya memang standar, tapi bukan itu yang membuat saya manyun.
Sayang sekali.. Zeta-Jones mainnya bagus, begitu juga Bartha. But they fell right into the rom-com trap: the scriptwriter/director who didn't think that they need to write something snippy/smart/quotable for a 'light' movie like this. Too bad! Love Actually was a good one. And so is Definitely Maybe, and Sleepless in Seattle. IMHO, all of them turned out really nice because the creators didn't destroy it with with their own low expectations. Bahkan - melenceng sedikit - Date Night pun akhirnya jadi film yang tidak murahan, masih romantis, dan lucu parah!
So yeah, movies like this can still be good and not tacky at the same time. If only.
Straight into scrapbook:
Perubahan emosi dua aktor ini - mulai dari pertama mereka ketemu, the joy of a new relationship, sampai lelahnya mereka ketika memutuskan pisah, tergambar jelas.
Straight into crapbook:
Tacky script! :(
Alternate Version:
Loose the cliche scenes, then add some John Mayer or Michael Buble's songs to set the mood. Hihi, ngarep.
Verdict: 2,5 out of 5
*I am not ending my quest for well-made rom-coms.. Lemme know if you know anything good yaa :)
the movie that almost nailed it
